Glossary:
- Seven Years' War: A conflict in Europe, North America, and India, lasting from 1756 to 1763, in which the forces of Britain and Prussia battled those of Austria, France, Russia, and other countries.
- War of Austria Succession: Prussia and Austria fought over Silesia and most of the rest of Europe took sides; 1740-1748.
- Holy Roman Empire: An empire established in Europe in the 10th century A.D., originally consisting mainly of lands in what is now Germany and Italy.
- Habsburg Empire: The Habsburg Monarchy (or Habsburg Empire) covered the territories ruled by the junior Austrian branch of the House of Habsburg.
- Maria Theresa: (1717–80), queen of Hungary and Bohemia 1740–80. Her accession triggered the War of the Austrian Succession.
- Francis I: Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and married to Maria Theresa.
